LOCTOTE appeared on Shark Tank and have had three successful Kickstarter campaigns. However, what is most impressive about LOCTOTE is their company ethos. As a member of 1% for the Planet, their business focuses on creating outstanding products, from outstanding materials, that leave minimal impact on the earth as they enter production. Their wanderlust is apparent from the stories section of their website, giving thoughtful tips on travel, interesting insight into materials, and an engaging ‘How I Use’ series with ambassadors. The company really wants to keep your gear safe, your adventures more exciting, and your days worry-free. That is an admirable goal, and with their products, you can “Live More, Worry Less”. We got our hands on the updated version of their inaugural product – the Flak Sack II.

Aesthetics

The Flak Sack II is simple from a distance with muted tones and subtle leather accents. At 13L it certainly is slender and sits close to your back – just like any other drawstring bag would. However, the closer you get the more apparent that this is not just any sling bag and the more stylish it becomes. The FLAKnit™ slash-proof fabric (with ANSI A9 cut level – the highest grade achievable) has a classy, heathered look. While it may look classy, it is an incredibly robust material made from Honeywell’s UHMWPE Spectra fiber – the same material found in many tactical products. This proprietary fabric is not only slash-proof but is also tear and abrasion-resistant.

The rope drawstrings may look elegant due to their flecked (reflective!) appearance, but they are cut-resistant and heavy-duty. Leather elevates the overall look in the form of a patch, sternum clasp, and corner accents. This is anything but your normal drawstring bag. It also comes in its own canvas slip bag, which is a nice touch for storage.

Security 

LOCTOTE® are famed for their ingenious security measures, and the Flak Sack II is full of them. Aside from the FLAKnit™ fabric, there is a reinforced locking strap that pairs with a beefy brass combination lock. This allows you to either lock the bag closed via its steel-reinforced locking strap, or, in the right situation, attach your bag to a table, fence, or other immovable object.

Add these to the large fleece-lined RFID pocket, and the simple drawstring bag is more akin to a drawbridge – keeping unwanted visitors out.

The lock stores nicely behind the leather patch when not in use, a thoughtful design choice to keep the necessaries close at hand.

In the Wild

Drawstring bags are, by design, slim and flat. That doesn’t really change here with the LOCTOTE Flak Sack II. The main difference is the weight of the bag (2lbs). Initially, I was shocked when I picked this up, but very quickly my concerns disappeared as I realized what this bag offers – peace of mind! In my opinion, this is a perfect travel and workout companion. You can take this bag to a gym and it becomes your portable locker, you can take it to a park (like my wife and I did) and lock it to a fence when working out or playing tennis. Of course, the combination lock is also on hand for any time you may forget yours at a YMCA, storage locker, or even travel. I can see it being a solid addition to any vacation when you can pack it flat in the bottom of a suitcase and bring it to the pool with you and your valuables. You could even use it as a makeshift “safe” in your lodging.

It is comfortable to use by design with the wide rope straps which prevent chafing on your collarbones and the chest snap even allows you mobility for short-medium hikes or bike rides. Due to the robust construction of the Flak Sack II, it almost feels padded, which is great, because it means all the items inside don’t protrude into your back when wearing it. This is big enough to hold a 13” laptop or tablet and I wouldn’t be concerned about putting them in there. There are also perfectly sized pockets to keep your keys, wallet, sunglasses, and phone (RFID pocket) safe. 

Where does this fit in your collection?

I don’t think that this is a bag that would replace your EDC, but for $169, and considering all of the valuable items that we carry with us from day to day, it feels like a very worthwhile addition to anyone’s arsenal. LOCTOTE has taken a simple design that we all recognized and turned the knob to 11. They have used exceptional materials and impressive security features to make the LOCTOTE Flak Sack II a travel essential for the modern-day adventurer.
