Carryology Morale Patch Program | The Firefly Final Collection

It’s official… these two are the very last of the Firefly Collection.

Being that these will be the last two Fireflies and they happen to perfectly round out the 10-piece collection numerically, we wanted to do something special to celebrate that. Including bringing a design back from its grave.

Introducing… the Firefly Final Collection!

P09: Firefly X-Pac Black “Yin”
P10: Firefly MultiCam Alpine “Yang”

We’ve been hinting at this one in our online community forum (click here to join our Carryology Classified group on Facebook) for quite some time now. Images of yin yangs, light and dark, alpine scenes, and more. The hints kept coming… because, well… we had to bring a design back from its grave, which took a bit of extra development and testing time.

These are officially the last two in the Firefly Collection, hence the name of this Firefly Final Collection release. We’ll still do more patches, of course. But the Firefly Collection will now be complete with these final two designs. The “Firefly” designation is determined by a laser-cut nylon upper with the classic Carryology script wordmark logo and a lower made from reflective material.

Yeah yeah yeah, ok, you got us. We know, we know! We genuinely thought P05-P08 would be the last of the Firefly Collection. The problem is, little did anyone know that P02-P04 (Firefly Multicam Collection – SOLD OUT)… was actually planned to be P02-P05… with one additional MultiCam pattern. Many clever readers caught on and asked us where the MultiCam Alpine was, as the 3 most popular MultiCam patterns were missing their frozen arctic sibling. P05 was originally supposed to be Firefly MultiCam Alpine. 

Maybe “supposed to be” isn’t the best wording… because we prototyped and manufactured several hundred units of the never-released P05: Firefly MultiCam Alpine for the MultiCam Collection. And then we threw every single last one of the MultiCam Alpine patches into the trash. Yes, straight to the trash.

Why would we do that? There’s a great discussion here if you want to dig into it. But, ultimately, because at the 11th hour, we took a close look at those P05 MultiCam Alpine production units… and they just didn’t pass our in-house quality control standards, no matter how much we wanted them to. So we made the extremely difficult decision to not have them released out into the world. The orange 3M reflective backing shined through the MultiCam Alpine far too much, making the brilliant white arctic camo appear to be some strange muted peachy pink. It’s no one’s fault. It’s just how physics, light, and colors work. Regardless, we just couldn’t do it. So we decided that we would hold off on MultiCam Alpine until we could find a better solution. Well, we did. And now it’s here.

But we couldn’t stop there. We couldn’t JUST release a single white camo patch. Frankly, we wanted two patches to numerically bookend the Firefly Collection to a nice even number 10. Ending the Firefly Collection at number 9 felt a bit too weird. So what could it be? We had MultiCam Alpine in 500D Cordura nylon with 3M Scotchlite black reflective behind it. It needed something to balance it. The next design should be a yang to this design’s yin. We had already used MultiCam Black (P03), so going 100% literal here wasn’t the move. We realized we could use a different material entirely, as with yin/yang it’s not supposed to be the exact same, but the opposite. So we selected a Carryology favorite, X-Pac, in black. And to push it further out into “equal opposite territory” we opted for an X-Pac using ripstop in the face fabric, for some extra visual flair. It would be made from Dimension Polyant X-Pac VX21RS with 3M Scotchlite white reflective behind it. As “yin” = dark and “yang” = light, they would be named and numbered accordingly, with the darkness first and the light being second. P09: light emerging from the darkness. P10: darkness emerging from the light. Balance achieved.

P09: Firefly X-Pac Black “Yin”
