A homage to the IKEA Frakta, but even stronger and bolder. In a new custom fabric developed by our friends at Dimension Polyant. 

This one-time-only, limited-edition release ships internationally, in three sizes: small, medium, and large.

Backstory

We’ve been celebrating this icon of carry since 2010, with Andy Fallshaw (Carryology co-founder) even penning a love poem, “Ode To The Big Blue IKEA Bag.” This year, we honored it with our Carry Awards “Hall Of Fame” title.

This bag’s origin story traces back to the 1960s, a result of meticulous design thinking and research. Thanks to IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad and Sten Lundén, hundreds of millions have been produced. The Frakta is a versatile marvel: a backup travel tote, gardening bag, grocery hauler, and more. It famously carries 50 kilograms, proven by lifting a 50-kilo woman without breaking.

It’s bold, utilitarian, simple, and unforgettable. Our team and community members tell tales about their Frakta collections, declaring it the most punk rock bag in existence.

As the world’s biggest fans of this icon, we wanted to create our own tribute—a physical ode, not just a love poem. We amplified everything great about the original, pushing it to new heights.

Killer Custom

We started with the fabric. While we adore the original blue polypropylene, we always want to lift things up a level, in the search for superior durability, strength, water resistance, and color.

Meet the New, CX42

It started back in 2020, when Taylor called Brandon with an idea, “If we could make our dream, technical EDC fabric, who would make it and what would it look like?” After a long discussion with ideas flung back and forth, the answer was simple; we’d hit up the lamination wizards at Dimension Polyant to pitch our idea and get their professional take on it.

We took some existing cutting-edge X-Pac technologies that we loved, beefed them up, twisted them, and came up with an idea based around a question: could we have a single piece of fabric that was both a proper face and a liner? For all intents and purposes eliminating the need for two separate fabrics and simplifying construction methods of the bag itself. We certainly could.

The first time we ever saw this fabric in person was when we visited Dimension Polyant in the Fall of ’21 after a New Haven, CT pizza tour with our friend Taylor North (Head of Technical Fabrics @ DP). It was hot off of the laminator and we loved what we saw.

We toyed around with this fabric over the next year, testing it, carefully revising and refining it based on real-world use, and making sure it was exactly what we wanted and needed. Ultimately, we came up with what we have today: CX42.

CX42 utilizes the face fabric of Dimension Polyant’s popular VX42, combines the extra 0* warp ply of their under-the-radar WX21, and slaps on a 150D recycled polyester hot orange backer fabric. Oh, and we upgraded the typical 840D polyester plys to a beefier 1000D for that extra “pop”.

To us, it’s perfect.

Better Build

For construction, we partnered with Helmie Ashiblie of Alpha One Niner, known for producing top-quality products for EDC and the military. This collaboration ensured the Fraktaologi is built to last without a hefty price tag.

To test its strength, we lifted two ladies, weighing over 100 kilograms combined, in the bag. The Fraktaologi passed with flying colors, not a single stitch breaking.

Size Counts?

So you can tackle any scenario you need, we’ve dished up three sizes—small (5.5 gallons), medium (10 gallons), and large (19 gallons)—the Fraktaologi is versatile. 

The Name

Its name, combining “Frakta” (Swedish for “carry”) and “Ologi” (Swedish for “the study of”), literally translates to “Carryology.”

Designed by Carryology, made by Alpha One Niner from custom Dimension Polyant CX42, the Fraktaologi is the ultimate do-everything-anywhere bag. Keep one in your car, under the sink, and in the hallway closet—you’ll use it more than you ever expected.
